Bitterfunny: From Short Film to Ironic Comic Series

You need to add a widget, row, or prebuilt layout before you’ll see anything here. 🙂

Bitterfunny is an ironic humor comic website, created by the makers of one of many Saxon short films, Bitter. With 131 comics as of writing — if you scroll down their website, you will see it goes for a while — Bitterfunny is clearly a passion project. However, Bitterfunny remains a rather mysterious website. Personally, when I am scrolling through Bitterfunny, I always wonder how it came to be, but I could not find any public behind-the-scenes information for Bitterfunny. So, join me as I try to get to the bottom of Bitterfunny.

Firstly, who exactly is behind this? Bitterfunny is an endeavor that seems to be at least supported by the creators of Bitter, and in the film’s credits we see two authors: Satchit Saha and Kiera Roedel. To find out more, I decided to interview Kiera:

  • Interviewer: How would you describe Bitterfunny?
  • Kiera: Bitterfunny is a website for “comics,” more accurately funny short stories told through images and text. The comics are based on the movie Bitter, and comics typically use Bitter characters and dialogue.
  • Interviewer: Bitterfunny has quite a unique style. Did anything inspire you?
  • Kiera: Bitterfunny was originally inspired by the website breakingbadfunny.com, which features similar comics, except for being made with Breaking Bad characters. However, since the creation of Bitterfunny, the humor has evolved into a distinctly different form than breakingbadfunny.com.
  • Interviewer: Would you say this humor style is better than the one that originally inspired Bitterfunny?
  • Kiera: Bitterfunny focuses more on comprehensible stories and ironic humor, rather than the much less directed and random style found on breakingbadfunny.com. Humor is subjective, so you’d have to visit the Bitterfunny website to find out what you think!
  • Interviewer: Now it’s clear Bitterfunny has evolved over the months of its existence, but how did it start out?
  • Kiera: It was a long time ago, but as I recall, a friend and I were browsing breakingbadfunny.com and one of us came up with the idea of a parody website based on Bitter, a short movie we had made not long before. The first two comics were created a few minutes later. As more were made, a website was set up to archive them all.

Additionally, I had other questions on my mind. Bitterfunny’s URL is hosted on https://whodiduexpect.com, which on its own seems to be a personal website.

  • Interviewer: I notice that Bitterfunny is found at https://bitterfunny.whodiduexpect.com, is this friend the “whodiduexpect”  person who runs the website? Can you tell me more about him/her/them?
  • Kiera: Though Whodiduexpect runs the website, I’m not sure if they’d want me to reveal any other personal information. It was really another friend and me who were the ones who came up with the idea, and made the first two comics.
  • Interviewer: Is there anyone else involved in Bitterfunny other than the creators of Bitter we should know about?
  • Kiera: Not yet!
  • Interviewer: That gets me wondering if someone, say a Bitter fan, wanted to contribute a comic, who would they contact?
  • Kiera: If someone is so inclined, we actually do have an email for issues, suggestions, and comic submissions relating to Bitterfunny: bitterfunny@whodiduexpect.com.

One final thing if you are going to check it out for yourself, the comics are based on ironic humor. That is, comics that are intentionally low-quality in order to be funny. If you are not used to this form of comedy, it might not be what you expect.
