A Look into the 2023 Grammy’s

On February 5th, 2023, The Grammy awards, officially referred to as the 65th Grammy Awards, streamed live. The Grammys are awards presented to recognize significant achievements within the music industry.

One of the most significant moments was Beyoncé breaking the record for most wins of all time with 32 total grammy awards. However, she lost in the ‘Album of the Year’ category for the fourth time. Although three songs from her newest album got awards, I think it was very disappointing to hear that the album didn’t win any other awards, as the album of the year award went to Harry Styles. While I do really enjoy his album that ended up winning, I feel that Beyoncé missing out on the award again was kind of a letdown.

As a Transgender person, I was very happy to find out that Kim Petras is now the first transgender woman to ever win a grammy for ‘Best Pop Duo/Performance’.  I feel that even though her popularity exploded with the release of her and Sam Smith’s song, “Unholy”, she still very much deserves a Grammy. That song is, rightfully, very popular, and Kim Petras and Sam Smith were the most deserving duo to win that award.

Something that I was very excited to hear is that Viola Davis is now the 3rd black woman in history to achieve the status of EGOT. An EGOT is to be awarded an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony, which is a huge achievement and she definitely deserves it. I feel that there were none more deserving than her to win in the category she did, and the memoir that won is an amazing read.

Overall, it was a generally popular group of awards, and rightfully so. It recorded 11 million viewers in the U.S! All of the receivers of rewards and nominees did amazing, and I’m glad I got to watch. The Grammys are always a really fun thing to watch. Even though they may spark up some controversy with fans, I still enjoy them and look forward to them nonetheless.
