The jump from middle school to high school athletics marks a significant rite of passage for many young athletes. The transition offers a new level of commitment to young athletes as they enter the new level of high school sports. It is a new beginning that reshapes a freshman’s athletic journey.
Looking In
Kollin Kalb ‘30 is officially entering his first year of high school. Like many other freshmen, Kalb is determined to join many sports at South Salem High School. For the season of fall, Kalb has decided to join his first year on the South Salem Football Team. Specifically, the freshman team. Kalb has been playing football for eight years.
“I have been playing since I was in first grade. I am so extremely passionate about football and I am so excited to play my first year for South as an official South Salem Saxon. I have been doing Saxon Youth Football since I was in sixth grade so I am ready to finally be one of the big guys,” Kalb said.
From going to Youth to High School Kalb feels there is more pressure for him to be a player and a teammate.
“The transition has definitely been difficult. Such as, a lot more running and a lot more stuff to remember. During training it is definitely intimidating to be with the older guys but it inspires me to be a successful football player and hopefully be able to make it to varsity,” Kalb said. “This transition will reshape my athletic journey because even though I have been a part of Souths football program, being a player is a different experience than being a spectator. Last year I had the privilege to be a ball boy and it felt thrilling to be on the field with Souths varsity team.”.
The first freshman game was on Thursday, September 3 at Forest Grove High School. Games for all teams will continue until October.
