Max Sturges ‘27 makes a commitment to South Salem High School every day through soccer and football. As a center back defender and kickoff specialist, he strives to push both teams to victory.
Soccer Roots
Sturges’ main focus is on soccer. He has an agreement between coaches that soccer gets priority and attends one or two football practices a week.
“I have more passion for soccer, I play full games for it and I have been playing since I was three,” Sturges said, “This is my first year playing football, and I have a much smaller role in the team.”
This season, Sturges led South’s defense to five shutouts in ten league games. The defense conceded eight goals and had a goals-against average of 0.8. Even though he plays a defensive position, he scored one goal against McKay High School and assisted against McNary High School.

“I have been playing there (center back) since middle school, since I have always been one of the bigger guys on the field,” Sturges said.
Pushing The Team
Sturges has adapted to both team dynamics, noticing the difference in size.
“In soccer, there are only about 20 of us at a time, so we all know each other a bit better. There are a lot more people at football, so there is sort of a traditional group I normally hang out with,” Sturges said, “However, despite the difference in team size they both have very supportive, strong team dynamics.”
Even though it is Sturges’ first season, he shows leadership and positivity. He challenges other players and learns quickly to better his team.
“When he would work out with the team, it would elevate the other kickers,” Kevin Trump, an assistant coach, said.

Trump worked closely with Sturges on his new sport journey. Not only did he have a strong work ethic, but they focused on mindfulness, gratitude and breathing.
“It (kickoff specialist) is a nerve wracking job because everyone’s eyes are on you,” Trump said.
Road to Football
Sturges joined the team in August. The football team was looking for someone to give them a strong advantage. Even though he faced a number of injuries, he always put his best foot forward to get back on the field.
“He was a spark plug of energy,” Trump said.
Despite his success in both sports, Sturges has decided to pursue one sport after high school.
“I am planning on playing soccer in college, I am not sure where at the moment. Unless something changes, I am not planning on switching to playing football in college,” Sturges said.
Yet, Sturges paved the way for future soccer players to join the football team in the future. As the soccer and football seasons come to an end, he creates an impact before he says goodbye to South.
