At South Salem High School, there are many events that encourage students from all grades to come together and feel the Saxon Spirit. These events are designed to ease the shift to high school for all incoming freshmen, and emphasize the uniqueness and specialties that come with being a Saxon.
Football Games
A classic opportunity for any new student to feel included in school spirit is attending a football game. Home games occur from September to October on some Friday nights, and are open for all students. Purchase tickets beforehand, $5 for non-ASB and free with ASB. The games are extremely popular and enjoyable, even for those who do not usually watch sports. South’s student section is notorious for being rowdy, and the Saxon cheer team are excellent at hyping up the crowd. Attending is a good opportunity to dress up, hang out with friends and support the school.
Assemblies
Another event that all freshmen should be sure to attend is assemblies. Which occur during the school day during homeroom. South hosts a plethora of assemblies throughout the school year, meant to unite the different grades, play games and showcase the school’s diversity. During cultural assemblies, South’s Hispanic Club, Native American Club, Pacific Islander’s Club and Asian Club perform dances for the student body, where the audience can also join in. At all the assemblies, Associated Student Body, (ASB), will set up games for students to play.
The most unforgettable assembly of the year is Color Clash, which takes place in the spring. This assembly is purely dedicated to games, where each grade will wear their respective colors. Freshmen are green, sophomores are yellow, juniors are blue and seniors are red. Each grade competes for prizes. This is a great opportunity to get involved and connect with one’s grade, because everyone gets very competitive.
Volleyball Games
Along with football games, girls volleyball games are a great way to stay spirited early on in the year. South’s volleyball team is extremely talented and athletic, and the student body gets very rowdy at their games. Students also can dress up for these games according to the theme, and support the players.
Field Days
Multiple field days are held throughout the school year on the football field, specifically for freshmen. ASB and Link Leaders will set up games for attendees to play, music to listen to and food and drinks. These events are a good opportunity for freshmen to get to know each other, as well as the upperclassmen who work the event.
