Although the hit show “Glee” has been off the air for over ten years, fans, or “Gleeks” have still found a way to shine a light on the musical comedy. So much so that director, Ryan Murphy has announced exclusive information about a reboot of the show.
“I just finished the script an hour ago,” Murphy told Entertainment Tonight at the “American Horror Story” Season 13 premiere on Wednesday, September 23rd. “Brad [Falchuk], Ian [Brennan] and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something,” he shared.
Murphy has revealed that ten of the original cast members have already been contacted. Despite the cast being so busy, many of whom are currently on Broadway, multiple cast members have already confirmed their involvement with the reboot, such as Lea Michele (Rachel Berry) and Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester).
“I vowed to myself that I wanted to write a couple of them to see what people think, particularly the cast, cause we were very close when we were making it,” Murphy said.
Moving on to Broadway
Many “Glee” cast members haven’t left the spotlight since the final season in 2015, which could explain the resurgence of popularity for the show. For example, Lea Michele wrapped up her role as Florence Vassy in the Broadway revival of “Chess”. Many other cast members have appeared on Broadway since the shows ending, such as Kevin McHale (Artie Abrams) as Brad Majors in the “Rocky Horror Picture Show”, Darren Criss (Blaine Anderson) originating the role of Oliver in “Maybe Happy Ending,” Matthew Morrison (Will Schuester) as Bobby Darrin in “Just in Time” and Jonathan Groff in “Hamilton”, “Little Shop of Horrors” “Merrily We Roll Along” and “Just In Time”.
The vast majority of the “Glee” cast have also found fame in other areas besides Broadway, such as movies within the DC comics universe. Actors such as Melissa Benoist (Marley Rose), Grant Gustin (Sebastian Smyth) and Darren Criss have originated roles in their perspective shows as DC heroes Supergirl and The Flash. Three cast members have also been featured on “Dancing with the Stars”, these being Amber Riley (Mercedes Jones), Heather Morris (Britney S. Pierce) and Harry Shum Jr. (Mike Chang), who is currently competing in Season 35.
Glee’s Legacy on the Younger Generation
Since the show has been resurrected and become an intricate part of popular culture, many fans have been expecting something special to commemorate “Glee”.
“That show is interesting because it’s come back around. So many young people now watch it,” he told People. “And I am like, ‘Maybe we should revisit that show.”
Murphy continued, “My nostalgia and love for that show is enough that I’m like, ‘Well, maybe people would like to see a new incarnation of that in some capacity.”
Murphy has not confirmed a set date for the release of the reboot, but fans have speculated that it will be sometime in the next couple years.
