Mendoza has played soccer for 12 years and currently plays as a midfielder for South Salem High School.

As a captain, Mendoza hopes to lead by example and motivate his teammates by showing respect to others and encouraging team efforts.

“Hard work pays off, always going to the field on your own time and doing the little things that others don’t see and do pays off for sure,” Mendoza said.

Mendoza emphasizes his commitment to his team and his confidence in his team’s ability.

“We have what it takes to compete at a high level,” Mendoza said.

Max Sturges ‘27, a fellow captain, also highlighted the team’s goals to perform well in districts and the state tournament. He also emphasized that mental fortitude was key to achieving their team’s goals.

Mendoza’s preparation for this season included understanding that competition occurs at all times, in practice as well as games. He also noted how this applies to his intentionality.

“Something I’ve learned from this past season is to never take any moment for granted. Time is valuable and it goes by fast, so be intentional with your actions,”Mendoza said.

Mendoza credits his support system as something that has influenced his soccer career. A challenge he has faced was when South Salem lost their first league match.

“We couldn’t get the job done, but we bounced back with a much better mentality and dominated the next few league games,”Mendoza said.

On Oct. 31, the Saxons lost 1-0 to Sunset High School in their first playoff match.
